Malaysia - DEHUMIDIFICATION ON VESSEL COLD LAY UP

Humidity is a constant threat to vessels and their cargo. Critical compartment in vessel need to have RH control are engine room, accommodation room, bridge & control room and forecastle & bow thrusters room. When the level of humidity rise, relative humidity increases and causing many problems, such as corrosion, mould and condensation.

Steel corrosion increase exponentially above 50%RH and the combination of salt laden environment and humid air will accelerate the corrosion process.

In accommodation area, spaces such as radio room, navigation bridge, spaces housing electrical machinery, ship linen & napery and mattresses storage room need humidity control to avoid mould growing.

Area in a vessel where dehumidifiers are used

  1. Engine Room
  2. Accommodation
  3. Bridge and control room
  4. Forecastle & Bow thrusters

Desiccant dehumidifier used to control room RH at 50% at ambient temperature. Dry dehumidification air will be circulated within the control compartment to allow desiccant dehumidifier to remove moisture from the room. The RH control room should be closed and sealed. Access to the space should be restricted to two opening only if possible.

For Car Carrier having capacity to ship 5000 vehicles, the typical room volume for RH control compartment are,

  1. Engine room : 6500 cubic meter
  2. Accommodation room : 3000 cubic meter
  3. Forecastle & Bow thrusters room  : 1500 cubic meter

To size the dehumidifier, we used Bry Air Dehumidifier selection program to size the dehumidifier base on room condition at 28 degC @ 50%RH, this condition refer to estimating night time room condition after dehumidification control. We are estimating room temperature after dehumidification will be around 40 degC during daytime and 28 degC during night time. (Enclosed the selection for reference)

The dehumidifier sizing base on selection program shall be as follow,

  1. Engine room : process air capacity is 3000 CMH (FLi 3000)
  2. Accommodation room : process air capacity is 1500 CMH (FFB 1500)
  3. Forecastle & Bow thrusters room : process air is 1000 CMH (FFB 1000)    

Dehumidifier can either be in continuous operation or controlled by humidistat to a level of relative humidity.

Bry-Air Recommendation:

It was recommended that relative humidity inside the vessel compartment room should be maintained at 50% RH at ambient temperature.
